Holiday event also features sales, Santa visits.

ROYAL OAK — Members of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce will rock Saturday at the Holiday Magic Parade, marching while drumming, strumming or shaking objects they use in their work and wearing clothing that reflect their businesses.

The 23-member percussion ensemble, called “Chamber ROCS,” succeeds the Laptop Lineup drill team that had entertained parade-goers for the past several years. Christine Chubenko of What Webs We Weave has organized and led the chamber’s parade entry since day one.

“Chamber ROCS will be as much fun as the drill team, with the added advantage of showcasing our members’ businesses,” Chubenko said. “It’s less demanding than precision marching, which has made it possible for more people to participate.”

In the ROCS ensemble, construction workers in hard hats will drum on paint buckets, an accountant will shake abacuses and a caterer will clash pan lids together like cymbals.

The group has been rehearsing for several weeks at the School of Rock, Royal Oak.

This year’s parade offers something for the entire family. The fun begins at 9 a.m. with special parade day sales in participating downtown stores. The parade runs from 10-11 a.m. on Washington Avenue from Lincoln to Fourth streets.

After the floats, clowns and musical performances herald the arrival of Santa, the jolly old elf will visit children from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Baldwin Theater.

Also, parking is free downtown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event is sponsored by the Downtown Development Authority.
